20-year-old Perth man, Harrison McPherson, who was filmed in Rottnest in February chasing and kicking a quokka, has been slapped with a $4000 fine after being charged with animal cruelty. The footage was filmed and uploaded to social media by friend Corey Douglas James, 21, who laughed as he captured the attack on his mobile phone.

McPherson was found through a police led name-and-shame search of social media, and has received death threats since the footage was posted. The 20-year-old has also since lost his FIFO employment, as his employer could not guarantee his safety after the video went viral. During the trial, his lawyer noted that the act was “out-of-character” for McPherson.
